Knitting for pre-history: Yarn Bombing Ice-Age Mammals

Ever since we started yarn bombing, we’ve always wanted to yarn bomb the large sculptures of prehistoric mammoths and the giant beaver on display at the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre. This week we got our chance! Working in partnership with the Yukon Beringia Interpretive Centre the Yarn Bomb Yukon team covered the mammoth and beaver for the upcoming Canadian Museums Association Conference held in Whitehorse May 27 to June 1. The theme of this year’s conference is Cultural Collaborations, and we thought this project would be a great example of museum and community collaboration. Beringia Ice-Age Mammals that have been Yarn-Bombed

Woolly Mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius). Considered to be symbolic of the last Ice Age (Quaternary – the last 2 million years) due to their large size, broad geographic distribution, relative abundance during the last glaciation, and adaptation to cold environments.

Giant Beaver (Castoroides ohioensis). This was the largest rodent in North America during the last Ice Age (Quaternary – the last 2 million years).

New Publication: MUSE

I was so thrilled this morning when I received the latest issue of MUSE Magazine, by the Canadian Museum Association. The January/February Issue is the special Northern edition and features an article on our Knitting for History: Yarn Bombing the DC-3 project. Open publication – Free publishing – More collaboration

This year the Annual CMA Conference will be held in Whitehorse. We’ve applied to present our yarn bombing feature as a session on cultural collaborations. We hope to hear the results in early February.

MUSE is the CMA’s “bi-monthly, bilingual magazine, which provides in-depth coverage of current issues, practical solutions to the challenges facing museums today, information on current projects, and industry best-practices. Each issue also includes book reviews, Canadian and international news, people news, opinion pieces, and current events”.

Craft nights at the Town and Mountain Lounge

Our weekly Sit and Stitch Nights are back and open to all crafters. Stop by the Town and Mountain Lounge (T&M) Wednesday nights from 5-7, bring knitting/crafting to work on and please feel free to bring friends. If you need knitting/crochet supplies, please let us know.

The T&M is a comfy little lounge with lots of comfortable seating, a quite place to stitch and sip. They are also super passionate about craft beer brewing, offering craft beers that you can’t usually get in Yukon, like Steam whistle, Belgian style beers etc. It’s a perfect match, adding craft beers to craft night.

Workshops We can offer workshops to individuals, groups, schools, at festivals etc. on how to knit, crochet and yarn bomb. All materials are provided for free.
Exhibitions
Talks Presentations to schools or groups, guilds or as part of a panel discussion. This is available for elementary schools, secondary schools, colleges and universities.
Yarn Bombing based community collaborations or public art performances, for examples, please view or blog or contact us. We gathered a team together to yarn bomb a truck for the winterval parade. We’re happy to be a part of the holiday event and to get out and yarn bomb again. Because it was so cold, we deiced to use zip ties to fasten the yarn, rather than sewing. Thankfully we were inside, but it wasn’t a heated garage so we had to work quickly. It’s been super cold here (-40 with the wind chill) and our yarn bombing has been on hold out of doors, till the weather warms up and our fingers don’t freeze.

Thanks to our wonderful yarn bombing crew Amber Church, Bree and the Yukon Arts Centre Public Art Gallery for staff and install support. Rumor had it that Santa would be riding in the back of the truck, but declined when he was offered a fancy fire truck instead.

In other news, we’ve sorted through some of the blankets and donated them to the Outreach Van, which will give locals in need blankets to keep warm in this winter.

Yarn Bomb Yukon ♥ Culture Days, to celebrate Yarn Bomb Yukon is hosting an interactive Art Project – In celebration of the theme of this year’s Culture Days theme – What does Culture mean to you? We want to know exactly that. Come on by the Old Fire Hall for an interactive art project where you can write what culture means to you, look for the yarn bombed tree to submit your statements. You can stop by any time on Saturday from 12-5pm.

While you are there, check out the Cultural Expo, organized by the Yukon Arts Centre. Come meet the cultural community of Whitehorse at the Old Firehall in downtown Whitehorse. Great activities for the whole family including: live music, face painting, cultural expo, our famous “Mystery Tour’, Kids Kreate craft activities and market by the Potluck Co-op Society and lots more. Doors Open Yukon – here’s a chance to visit local historical sites all weekend, free of charge.

There are so many great events happening across Canada and here in Whitehorse in Celebration of Culture Days. Come on out, bring your friends, bring your family and be a tourist in your own town. Yarn Bombing @ Theatre in the Bush

I’m super excited to be yarn bombing for Ramshakle Theatre’s annual Theatre in the Bush. I’ll be there yarn bombing, but we want you to join us! Yarn Bomb Yukon will supply small knitted and crochet yarn bombs for you to take and yarn bomb to your hearts delight. Yarn bomb in the bush, or save it for something else that sparks your imagination.

What is it and how does it work? Check out Brian’s website for all the details, but here’s an outline

September 22nd @ 8pm

7 artists.

7 locations drawn from a hat.

All on 2 and 1/2 acres almost in the middle of nowhere.

This is our third year of THEATRE IN THE BUSH !

This year we’re presenting the show on the equinox, Saturday September 22nd.We’re returning to our original format of guided tours to see the shows.

We’ve lined up an all star group of performers and artists who will gather a week before the show and draw their location from a hat. They then have one week to pull together a performance, installation or presentation in the middle of the bush for you to come and see.

How does it work on the night of the show?

You bring your flashlight, warm clothing and your flask. We give you an evening of tromping around in the bush stumbling on theatre and random art. We’ll gather at the fire, split off into groups and then you’ll travel the site with a guide and see 7 shows over the course of 2 hours.

Who will be performing?

You’ll see brand new work from a wide range of performers. From salty Yukon playwrights to ambitious 10 year old kids. We’ve got it all! Actually we have no idea what we’ve got, but we’ll all find out on the 22nd.

We were excited to be interviewed for the newest show in town Harper Street Publish’s Yukon North of Ordinary Cable 9 tv show. A partnership between Northwestel Community TV and North of Ordinary Magazine, it discusses events, people and happenings in Whitehorse Yukon, hosted by Lauren Tuck. We’re still continue to yarn bomb Whitehorse and beyond and are open to suggestions, offers and commissions from individuals and organizations across North America. So far we’ve been booked for a workshop in a a local high school’s home economics class and we’re looking forward to sharing our yarn bombing enthusiasm and techniques. Hopefully it will inspire students to start their own lunch time knitting and yarn bombing workshops.

Dawson: You Bring It, We Yarn Bomb It

In an effort to spread some yarn bomb love around at the Riverside Arts Festival, we hosted a you bring it, we yarn bomb it workshop. Members of the public were invited to bring us objects to yarn bomb or suggest objects around town to yarn bomb. There were quite a few requests to covered some well loved landmarks in yarn, you can see the photos in this post. It was so much fun to see what people would bring to be yarn bombed. We yarn bombed hats, cell phone cases, camera cases, cast iron wheels, bike helmets and a caribou skull!

We will continue to yarn bomb Whitehorse and beyond and are open to suggestions, offers and commissions from individuals and organizations. Riverside Arts Festival: Yarn Bomb Requests

We had such a great time at the Riverside Arts Festival over the weekend. Taught a people to yarn bomb and knit, yarn bombed the town, met lots of wonderful artists and enjoyed the last camping trip of the season. We had quite a few requests to yarn bomb objects in Dawson, like the Dome Bench made by Holly, who loved our addition which was great. Others suggested the statue of the miner and the cache outside of the Dänojà Zho Cultural Centre. We also hosted a you bring it we yarn bomb it workshop, which I’ll post about tomorrow.
