The pattern to yarn bomb the DC-3 is based on blankets that are 4×6 feet. Mary Ellen Read, architect at Northern Front Studio, created the pattern for us. Thanks Mary Ellen for helping us make this project a reality and letting us know just how many blanket’s we’ll need to cover the DC-3. PDFs of the pattern are available: view 1, view 3, view 3. To cover the majority of the plane, we’ll need 74 blankets that are 4 x 6 feet, as well as the odd shaped sizes outlined in the pattern below, which will cover the top surface of the plane. We are looking for about 150 blankets in total, the extra will ensure that we have enough to cover the entire plane.
How to knit or crochet a pattern is entirely up to you. The maximum size of the blankets is 4 x 6 feet, but not all of them need to be that size, they can be as small as a granny square. Suggested pattern dimensions are 4 x 6 feet, 2 x 3 feet, 1 x 1.5 feet.
Once the project is complete, blankets will be donated to local charities and shelters.
